What is e-Business?

When asked the above question, most people reply, "e-Business is just selling your products over the Internet." While partially correct - e-Business usually does use the Internet to sell goods - this definition oversimplifies the basic principle. More accurately, e-Business is a fundamentally new way of conducting business electronically using the latest technologies, such as the Internet. It also involves moving away from conventional business thinking in order to effectively compete in a new and dynamic environment: cyberspace. The emphasis shifts towards empowering your customers and getting them more deeply involved in your business. As well, your internal processes will become more automated with significantly less paperwork.

Can my business benefit from e-Business?

Absolutely. e-Business has been proven to:

  • Reduce administrative and operating costs
  • Reduce inventory costs
  • Reduce the cost of procurement
  • Improve customer service and satisfaction
  • Improve inventory management
  • Streamline procurement procedures
  • Increase communication efficiency and interaction with employees, vendors, customers and strategic partners
  • Increase revenues and profit margins

How does e-Business work?

E-Business uses a corporate web site and intranet to efficiently interact with your customers, vendors, strategic partners and employees. E-Business takes many forms and may only focus on one particular function (procurement, for example), but here is one common example: Imagine your web site as an electronic storefront with an online product catalogue. As your customers make their selections, their own individual pricing options will automatically be calculated. When they finish browsing your electronic storefront, your customers can pay for their orders safely and securely with credit or debit cards. As well, your inventory and warehousing is automatically managed by monitoring stock levels and sending an electronic purchase order to your vendor with just-in-time efficiency.

Isn't e-Business expensive and only for big corporations?

Not at all. Technology prices are continuously falling, allowing small to medium sized businesses to enjoy the same benefits of e-Business as larger companies. In fact, many e-Business users have recouped their initial implementation costs within a very short period of time, thanks to the cost reductions and additional revenue generated from their new solution.

How safe are e-Business financial transactions?

The security and integrity of online financial transactions is a legitimate and primary concern for most companies. Can you be assured your customers and your business will be safe? Yes, you can. Electronic financial transactions such as global securities trading, banking and credit/debit card transactions occur in our daily lives, yet we hardly give them a second thought. New security technology like 128-bit SSL encryption ensures the safety and privacy of both you and your customers, and is built into the latest e-Business software tools. Your security and privacy is a top priority with all e-Business providers.

Can I implement e-Business in-house, or should I outsource?

Today's software makes it easier for people with moderate technical knowledge to do amazing things. You can probably implement your own e-Business solution, but consider the time you will have to spend away from your core business responsibilities to design, develop, configure, test, debug, install and maintain your solution. As well, you will likely need to learn how to use server software, web tools like ASP, EDI, SSL and so on, and integrate different systems so they work together harmoniously. A more time and cost-effective solution would be to outsource to a qualified solution provider with certified systems experts who can:

  • Conduct a thorough analysis of your needs, wants and concerns and design a solution that addresses these issues
  • Utilize the latest technology to build the right solution for you
  • Configure the latest software so everything works exactly the way you want it
  • Integrate a variety of systems to ensure your new e-Business works with youroldere databases and accounting systems
  • Ensure the safety and security of your e-Business Provide professional technology consulting services to help your business succeed
